Hiriketiya has two distinct seasons, and knowing when to visit can make the difference between glassy dawn patrols and washed-out rainy days. Here's a practical month-by-month breakdown.
The Two Seasons at a Glance
Peak season (December – March): Dry, sunny, and busy. The north-east monsoon sends consistent swell to the bay, making this the best time for surf. Temperatures hover around 28–30°C with low humidity. This is when Hiriketiya fills up — accommodation prices rise and the best spots get crowded.
Green season (April – November): Warmer, wetter, and quieter. The south-west monsoon brings afternoon rain showers (usually 1–3 hours) and bigger, less predictable swell. Prices drop, the crowds thin out, and the jungle turns lush green. Many locals consider this the most beautiful time of year.
Month-by-Month Breakdown
January – February
Peak conditions. Dry weather, consistent 3–5 ft swell, warm water (27°C), and offshore winds most mornings. The bay is at its busiest — book accommodation 2–3 months ahead. Best for surfing, snorkelling, and extended beach days.
March
Still excellent. The monsoon has ended but crowds haven't fully arrived yet. Temperatures climb to 31–33°C. A sweet spot for visitors who want peak weather without peak crowds.
April – May
Inter-monsoon transition. Hot and humid with sporadic afternoon thunderstorms. The south-west monsoon begins to build. Surf becomes inconsistent. Great for temple visits, lagoon kayaking, and exploring nearby places.
June – August
Full green season. Expect daily afternoon rain (usually 1–2 hours), then clear skies. The bay is quiet — many cafés offer off-season discounts. Surf is bigger but less clean. The surrounding countryside is at its most photogenic.
September – November
Late green season. Rain eases off, swell remains consistent, and crowds are at their lowest. September and October are some of the cheapest months to visit. Water visibility improves for snorkelling. November sees the monsoon transition — expect variable conditions.
December
Peak season kicks in. The monsoon has passed, swell picks up, and holiday crowds arrive. Early December is a sweet spot — good weather, building swell, and slightly fewer people than January.
